Aveeno Protect + Hydrate Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Sunscreen Review

It’s really just an indescribable relationship with this one.

The Aveeno Protect + Hydrate sunscreen with SPF 50 is meant to protect you from UVA and UVB rays from the sun. Ideally, you should wear sunscreen during the day, even if you’ll be indoors, because once there are sun rays coming into the room, you are exposed to UVB which causes you to age faster – now we don’t want that.

It comes in a tube which is great because it’s easy to press the product unto your fingers for use. I got it for GHS 90.00

It is white and lotion like. It looks like it will leave a white cast but it disappears into the skin nicely. It has a mild or slightly strong scent – depending on your scent tolerance, lol.

A Pea sized amount of the Aveeno Broad Spectrum SPF 50

So apparently you need just a pea-sized amount of sunscreen on your face, and that is enough. Be reminded that you need to reapply sunscreen every two hours and also if you can avoid being in the sun between 10am and 3pm, that would be great. You really only need sunscreen with SPF 30+ and above. A sunscreen with SPF 100+ works just the same way as SPF 50. Anything below SPF 30 is a no no.

The Aveeno Sunscreen disappears totally into the skin, which is really great for us darker skinned people.

  1. It has broad spectrum SPF 50
  2. It leaves no cast on darker skin tones
  3. It claims to hydrate your skin when you apply it
  4. It has oats that is supposed to be a soothing and calming ingredient.

  1. It is oily when applied
  2. It may not be tolerable for sensitive skin types
  3. It contains fragrance

My experience

I’m still struggling with using sunscreen during the day when I’m at home, lol. But we need sunscreen, especially as black people. I recently realized I had gotten a deep tan on my shoulder, so I religiously use this sunscreen on my body whenever I’m going out into the sun now. I have mixed feelings with regard to this product.

First, it has fragrance. I didn’t know it did till I got it. And I couldn’t return it because I had opened it so I decided to manage with it- I mean the smell isn’t bad or strong.

On my first use I realised my skin was burning – it wasn’t that bad though. I still feel a burning sensation or tingling for some time after application but it is bearable. I am always uncomfortable within the first minutes of applying it.

Thirdly its oily! I have combination skin, my t zone and cheeks get oily all the time. . As if that wasn’t enough I have to leave the house oily faced because of this product. I am not sure if I have sensitive skin because so far I haven’t reacted to any product aside this one and the Simple Kind to Skin Hydrating Light moisturiser. This product claims to have oats, which is a soothing ingredient yet I’m somehow reacting to the product. My inability to get the Neutrogena Hydroboost SPF 50 at the time made me get this product and I am really regretting making that decision.

The Purito Centella Green Level Unscented Sunscreen and Krave Beauty’s The Beet Shield sunscreen is often recommended as well, the only issue is the price point lol.

Would I recommend this product? No. Unless you have dry non-sensitive skin, I wouldn’t recommend.

What sunscreen recommendations would you make? Do share your experience in the comments.

Xoxo, Riya.
